26 October 09: Edmonton
Ambassador Jacobson visits Edmonton
Ambassador Jacobson made his first official visit to Edmonton to meet with Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Hon. Ken Kowalski, provincial government ministers, municipal representatives and members of the local business community. While at the Legislature, the Ambassador was introduced to members of the legislative assembly during the opening day of fall session. Ambassador Jacobson and his wife also stopped by Prince Charles Elementary School to talk with students in the school’s program for urban aboriginal children, and enjoy short concert by school’s orchestra. The Ambassador shared stories of President Obama’s election with students, stressing the opportunities now available to anyone in North America and the importance of studying hard, being good citizens and maintaining a sense of hope.

Ambassador Jacobson makes first official visit to Saskatchewan
Ambassador David Jacobson made his first official visit to Saskatchewan where he was welcomed by Premier Brad Wall, Lt. Governor, Dr. Gordon Barnhart and other members of the provincial cabinet. The Ambassador’s two-day visit included meetings with business representatives and community leaders, a briefing on carbon capture and sequestration at the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, and tours of the carbon capture and sequestration project in Weyburn, the RCMP “depot” Division in Regina and the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron in Saskatoon. In Regina, the Ambassador also attended a reception to honor Canadian reservists from the Royal Regina Rifles preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.

Ambassador Jacobson visits Alberta for the first time
Two weeks into his tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson visited Alberta to meet with government, business, academic and community leaders, students and media. In Calgary, the Ambassador and his wife Julie were welcomed to the city by Mayor Dave Bronconnier with a traditional white-hat ceremony. Ambassador Jacobson also participated in a business roundtable organized by the Calgary Economic Development Authority, spent time talking to students at the University of Calgary and attended a dinner hosted by the University of Alberta -Calgary Centre. The following day, he toured the Alberta oil sands to learn more about operations there and related environmental issues as well as the steps being taken to address them. His tour included a meeting with Chief Jim Boucher of the Fort McKay First Nation to learn more about the concerns of his people. The Ambassador’s first trip to Alberta also included a stop in Red Deer to meet with local government representatives and community leaders and speak to media.

U.S. watershed management expert visits Alberta
Watershed management expert Juliet Christian-Smith visited Edmonton and Calgary to discuss water management issues and procedures in the United States. While in Alberta, Christian-Smith met with academics, students, municipal government officials, NGOs and conservation groups. Her visit provided the opportunity to exchange information, discuss best practices and compare regulatory frameworks as well as watershed management initiatives in the U.S. and Canada. Christian-Smith is a Dr. Juliet Christian-Smith is a Senior Research Associate with the Pacific Institute, a California-based nonpartisan research institute that works to advance environmental protection, economic development, and social equity.

Consul General Lochman presents U.S. Army service medal to Canadian military attaché
Consul General Laura Lochman presented a U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal to Canadian Lt. Col. Bill Schultz in recognition of his contribution to strengthening ties between the U.S. and Canadian armies while serving as Assistant Military Attaché to the U.S. While making the presentation at a meeting of the Royal Alberta United Services Institute, the Consul General praised Lt. Col. Schultz’ work in Washington, D.C. as part of a great tradition of military cooperation between the United States and Canada.

Consul General Lochman talks about U.S.-Canada relations with local Rotary group
Consul General Laura Lochman spoke to members of the Calgary West Rotary Club about the Obama administration's foreign policy goals and the importance of the U.S.-Canada relationship, especially with respect to cross-border trade, military cooperation, counter-terrorism efforts, energy security and protecting the environment. In her address to club members, the Consul General remarked that the United States and Canada enjoy a strong bond based on shared values and mutual respect. “The underlying truth of the U.S. Canadian relationship is the depth of its interlinkedness,” Lochman said.

Ramadan Kareem
As the new crescent moon ushers in Ramadan, the President extends his best wishes to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world.
Each Ramadan, the ninth month on the lunar calendar, Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days. Fasting is a tradition in many religious faiths and is meant to increase spirituality, discipline, thankfulness, and consciousness of God's mercy. Ramadan is also a time of giving and reaching out to those less fortunate, and this summer, American Muslims have joined their fellow citizens in serving communities across the country. Over the course of the month, we will highlight the perspectives of various faiths on fasting and profile faith-based organizations making real impacts in American cities and towns. Climate change policy expert visit Calgary
Climate change policy expert Carolyn Fischer visited Calgary to share her research to compare and assess different climate change policies. While in Alberta, Fischer met with academics, students, the media and representatives from the provincial government and NGO community to discuss current U.S. efforts to address climate change with the American Clean Energy and Security Act (Waxman-Markey bill), and share her insights on the economic considerations involved in formulating new legislation to address carbon emissions. Fischer is an economist and senior fellow at Resources for the Future, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that conducts independent research – rooted primarily in economics and other social sciences – on environmental, energy, natural resource and public health issues.![]()

Consul General Lochman celebrates American Independence
Consul General Laura Lochman celebrated her first Independence Day in Canada by hosting hundreds of guests at her official residence in Calgary. In her remarks, Lochman highlighted the productive partnership between the United States and Canada in the areas of trade, public health, environment and North American security. “With the most robust relationship of any two countries in the world, we share not only an enormous border, but the fundamental values that define our societies,” she said. " Calgary Consulate hosts Canadian “hero” at Trafficking in Persons video conference
The Calgary Consulate hosted a digital video conference on June 23 with U.S. Ambassador Luis de Baca, director of the Office to Combat Human Trafficking and local guests to discuss the recently released 2009 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report. The event brought together officials from the Canadian Border Services Agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, academics and an interested citizens group as well as Canadian professor Benjamin Perrin, who was designated one of only seven world-wide “TIP Heros” in the Department of State TIP report. The group discussed with Ambassador de Baca and others across Canada effective strategies and issues of cooperation between governments, law enforcement agencies and citizens groups in combating human slavery and trafficking in persons. " New Consul General white-hatted by Mayor of Calgary
New Consul General Laura Lochman and her husband Joe Schaefer received white cowboy hats from Mayor Dave Bronconnier at City Hall June 23 in a traditional City of Calgary welcome ceremony. The mayor named Lochman and Schaefer “honorary Calgarians” and congratulated her on being the latest in a long line Consuls General to have arrived at the Consulate since it opened in 1906. “We’re thrilled to be here in time for Stampede,” said Lochman. “We’re looking forward to getting to know the city and meeting people.” [view slideshow]Consulate News Archive >>
